Since our operations began in the Algarve in 2004, we have seen 50 hole in ones achieved by golfers playing the MDHIO game. An incredible 10 hole in ones were achieved in 2015 alone across our Portuguese Million Dollar Hole in One golf courses.
The hole in ones were achieved by golfers from all over Europe this year but one course stood out as being the luckiest amongst others in Portugal.
This year the number of hole in ones achieved more than doubled on previous years and Jamie O’Doherty, Regional Manager for Portugal and mainland Spain says this was due to “the game itself being higher value, an increase in tourist golf rounds and sustained spells of good weather, plus a general improvement in the economy and exchange rates have all significantly added to participation numbers”
Below you will find a list of everyone who achieved a hole in one in 2015:
Jeroen M Dudok van Heel, 7th Hole, Vila Sol
The record breaking year started off with a super hole in one by Jeroen M Dudok van Heel on 24th March 2015 at the 7th Hole at Vila Sol near Vilamoura. His ace was witnessed by his playing partners, Peter Bender, Paul Janssen and Thys Schutte on the 162 metre par 3 hole. Jeroen is looking to join the MDHIO team in Las Vegas in June 2016 to shoot for the $1 Million Dollars US.
Malcolm Graveling, 12th hole, Salgados Golf Course
The second winner was achieved at Salgados golf course near Albufeira on 16th April 2015. Malcolm Graveling achieved his second ever ace with a 6 iron into a strong wind on the 12th hole. The 19 handicapper from Croydon in the UK plays at Shirley Park Golf Club.
Ian Owen, 12th Hole, Salgados Golf Course
Next up was Ian Owen, who also managed to achieve his first ever hole in one at the 12th at Salgados on the 11th May 2015 with a “slam dunk” pitching wedge where his ball went straight into the hole without bouncing. He was on a stag party with 7 others and his ace was witnessed by Andrew Roberts, Arwel Hall and Keiron Monyn Williams. Ian comes from Llanddona in Angelsey, Wales.
George Ritchie, 7th Hole, Royal Golf Course, Vale do Lobo
On 13th May 2015 on the Royal Golf course at Vale do Lobo, George Ritchie, was successful in making his 3rd ever Hole in One with a rescue club on the 7th hole. He achieved his ace with Alan Buchan, John Cardno and Mark Donn watching. They were all part of a 20 man group from Iverallochy Golf club in Aberdeenshire in Scotland. The 11 handicapper is part of the group who annually travel to play golf in April/May time.
Lewis Collins, 8th Hole, Olives Course, Pinheiros Altos
Lewis Collins from Beckenham in England was the next winner at the beautiful 8th hole on the Olives course at Pinheiros Altos on 14th July 2015. Lewis’s ace was achieved with a sand wedge and witnessed by his father Joe Collins while on a family trip on their first visit to Portugal to celebrate his parents 25th Anniversary.
Andreas Spreiter, 7th Hole, Quinta da Marinha Golf Course
The one and only ace in the Lisbon area was achieved on 4th September 2015 by Andreas Spreiter from Switzerland at 7th hole on Quinta da Marinha golf course. Andreas is a left handed 23 handicapper from Steinhausen near Zurich and won himself the trip to Las Vegas 2016. He made his ace with a 6 iron.
Manu Pillai, 7th Hole, Vila Sol
Another impressive Hole in One was achieved on 22nd September 2015 by Manu Pillai on the tricky 7th hole at Vila Sol. The 28 handicapper’s first ever ace was made by hitting a driver to get over the water. His first ever hole in one was witnessed by Ajay Paliwal, Shouqat Shaikh and Hash Patel on their first visit to Portugal. The group were all from Maidenhead in England and have stated they would be returning to the Algarve on their annual trip.
Jason Zillwood, 7th Hole, Vila Sol
Despite being a tricky looking hole, the 7th at Vil Sol seemed to be a fruitful hole for our winners and another winner was Jason Zillwood from Gillingham in Kent who aced that hole on 1st October 2015 with a 7 wood.
Jason is a 14 handicapper and former member of the Sittingbourne Golf Club. He was out in Portugal on a Ryder Cup style corporate golf event for two days and his hole in one was witnessed by Alistair Hood, Stewart Lucidi and Bruce MacKay.
Laurence Parr, 7th Hole, Royal Course, Vale do Lobo
Our penultimate winner of the year was Laurence Parr on the 22nd October 2015 at Vale do Lobo on the 7th hole Royal Course. His ace was witnessed by Jo Richards on another stunning day in the Algarve. Laurence is from Salford in Essex and will be trying to replicate his ace to win $1 Million Dollars US in Las Vegas in June 2016.
Phillippe Roberti de Winghe, 7th Hole, Ocean Course, Vale do Lobo
Finally our last winner of 2015 was Phillippe Roberti de Winghe from Belgium, who made is ace on the 7th hole of the Ocean Course at Vale do Lobo on 9th November. He used a 5 iron to record his first ever hole in one after 40 years of playing the game.
The 13 handicapper, who is a regular visitor to the Algarve, is President at Winge Golf Club and was delighted with his achievement during a TAP airlines tournament at Vale do Lobo.
